In Cooperation with Port Said University: Intensive Climate Change Awareness Campaign Targets Delta Youth in its Third Round
Under the patronage of His Excellency Professor Dr. Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, and in collaboration with Professor Dr. Sherif Youssef Saleh, President of Port Said University, Port Said University – represented by the Faculty of Engineering within its Engineering, Science, and Technology Sector – hosted the third round of the awareness campaign in Port Said Governorate. This initiative is part of the diligent efforts undertaken by the Egyptian state to raise awareness about climate change and address its impacts.
Port Said University welcomed the team of the "Enhancing Climate Change Adaptation" project, which delivered a valuable awareness seminar to university professors and students. The seminar included a comprehensive presentation on climate challenges and their effects on the Nile Delta. It also highlighted the efforts made by relevant state bodies to address these impacts through activities and projects aimed at enhancing climate change adaptation.
Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali, the Executive Director of the project, reviewed the imminent dangers facing the Nile Delta due to climate change, emphasizing the decisive measures the state is taking to confront these risks. This included highlighting the protection works implemented for one-third of the Delta using environmentally friendly coastal techniques, in addition to the outputs of the integrated coastal zone management plan. This plan aims to provide decision-makers with a future vision regarding the anticipated risks along the Egyptian Mediterranean coast and their potential scenarios until 2100, and to define the roles of relevant entities and the procedures adopted to adapt to the impacts of these risks according to the plan's institutional framework.
For his part, Mr. Hassan Gabrallah, the project's Media Coordinator, stressed the utmost importance of comprehensive community awareness regarding climate change, with a particular focus on youth and university students, as they represent the core and future of the nation. He affirmed the project management's keenness to prioritize all universities in coastal governorates in the awareness plan, noting the successes achieved by similar seminars previously held at Kafr El Sheikh and Damietta Universities.
The seminar was honored by the presence of a distinguished group of university leaders and esteemed professors, including Prof. Dr. Taha Ibrahim Farrag – Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Prof. Dr. Mohamed Ramadan – Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Ihab Rashad Tolba – Dean of the Faculty of Management Technology and Information Systems, Prof. Dr. Mamdouh Saleh – Professor at the Civil Engineering Department and former Vice President of Raya University, Prof. Dr. Laila Kamar – Professor at the Marine Engineering Department and former Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, in addition to Vice Deans of the Engineering, Science, and Technology sectors, heads of departments, program coordinators, faculty members, and students from the relevant faculties.
The seminar was coordinated and prepared through joint efforts between the project team and Dr. Heba Abdel Atty – General Supervisor of the Engineering Sector, Dr. Tarek Selim – Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Dr. Ahmed Sobhy – Assistant Supervisor of the Sector, and Eng. Abdel Rahman Saleh – Assistant Lecturer at the Civil Engineering Department.
The objectives of the awareness campaign underscore the Egyptian state's commitment and keenness to build a generation aware and understanding of climate change challenges, and qualified to contribute effectively to efforts to adapt to and mitigate its impacts on the nation.
