Comprehensive Climate Change Awareness Campaign Launched in Port Said Under Auspices of Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, in Collaboration with Ministry of Petroleum

Under the patronage of His Excellency Professor Dr. Hani Sewilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, an intensive awareness campaign on climate change and the diligent efforts of the Egyptian state to address its impacts has been launched in Port Said Governorate. This campaign is part of the "Enhancing Climate Change Adaptation in the Nile Delta and Northern Coast" project, and comes in fruitful cooperation with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.

The first activities of the climate change awareness campaign kicked off from the heart of the Zohr field in Port Said, where Belaeim Petroleum Company (Petrobel) hosted an important seminar. Engineer Khaled Mowafy, Chairman and Managing Director of Petrobel and Head of the Geographical Committee for the Northern Petroleum Region, inaugurated the seminar with a speech highlighting the challenges of climate change and the efforts made by relevant state agencies. He pointed to the company's various projects and activities, and the scale and diversity of operations in the Zohr field, emphasizing its great importance as a significant source of natural gas production in Egypt. He also stressed the importance of raising awareness about the climatic changes occurring in Egypt, particularly on the Egyptian coasts, due to their close connection and direct impacts on the activities and projects of petroleum companies. He underscored the significance of these meetings in enhancing cooperation between the bodies concerned with the management and protection of Egyptian coasts and the petroleum sector and companies in Egypt.

Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali, Executive Director of the project, reviewed the risks of climate change on the Nile Delta and the state's efforts to address these risks through the project's various activities. This included protection works implemented for one-third of the Delta using environmentally friendly coastal technologies, in addition to the outputs of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management Plan. This plan aims to provide a future vision for decision-makers regarding expected risks along Egypt's Mediterranean coast and their scenarios until 2100, defining the roles of relevant authorities and the procedures adopted to deal with and adapt to the effects of these risks according to the plan's institutional framework.

For his part, Professor Hassan Gabrallah, Media Coordinator for the project and head of the community awareness plan, indicated that the beach protection works implemented by the project have significantly contributed to raising the standard of living for citizens in these areas, especially as women played a major role in participating in the protection works involving reeds, a component of the protection body. He stated that this seminar is part of the third round of the comprehensive awareness campaign for the climate change adaptation project in coastal governorates, which began last December in Kafr El Sheikh, Damietta, and finally Port Said governorates.

The seminar was honored by the presence of a distinguished group of prominent leaders, including Engineer Chemist Mohamed Hassan Afify, General Manager of Occupational Safety, Health, Environmental Protection, and Asset Integrity, and Rapporteur of the Geographical Committee for the Northern Petroleum Region at Petrobel. From the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, attendees included Engineer Nesrine Salah El Din, Executive General Manager of Energy Efficiency and Climate Management, and Dr. Mohamed Magdy, Director of Energy Efficiency and Climate Management, along with a number of leaders, engineers, and employees from the petroleum sector in Port Said Governorate.
