Kafr El Sheikh University's Faculty of Commerce Hosts Important Seminar on Climate Change Adaptation and Efforts to Protect the Delta and North Coast.
As part of the awareness campaign launched in the coastal governorates under the patronage of His Excellency Professor Dr. Hany Sweilam, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Major General Dr. Alaa Abdel Moaty, Governor of Kafr El Sheikh, and Dr. Abdel Razek Desouky, President of Kafr El Sheikh University, an important awareness seminar titled "A Message from Planet Earth" was hosted by the Faculty of Commerce at Kafr El Sheikh University. This campaign aims to raise community awareness about the state's efforts in combating the impacts of climate change.
The seminar saw the attendance of a select group of professors and students. The faculty welcomed the working team of the Climate Change Adaptation Project in the Nile Delta and North Coast of Egypt to present a comprehensive overview of this vital topic. Distinguished attendees included Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali, the Executive Director, Mr. Hassan Gabrallah El Tayeb, the Media Coordinator, Eng. Mohamed El Ganzoury, Director of the Governorate's Environment Department, and Eng. Fatma El Shawadfy, Director General of the Urban Planning Department.
Dr. Abdel Razek Desouky, President of Kafr El Sheikh University, emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of climate change due to its profound impact on the environment, economy, public health, and food and water security. The most significant risks of climate change include negative impacts on biodiversity and vital resources, threats to food and water security, rising temperatures, and the spread of diseases like malaria and dengue fever due to changes in vector insect distribution. Climate-induced natural disasters such as hurricanes and fires also cause significant damage to infrastructure and lead to massive economic losses.
Dr. Amani Shaker, Vice President of the University for Community Service and Environmental Development, affirmed the importance of organizing these seminars. She highlighted that these events reflect Kafr El Sheikh University's leading community and environmental role, aiming to build a more sustainable society and achieve environmental, economic, and social benefits, in addition to promoting investment in the preservation of natural resources. She also noted that organizing these seminars aligns with fulfilling international agreements like the Paris Climate Agreement, enhancing Egypt's reputation and global standing.
For his part, Dr. Walid Afify, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, pointed to the importance of investing in the future by adopting a low-carbon economy that creates new job opportunities in renewable energy and clean technology. He also stressed the need for an integrated plan for coastal zone management across the entire North Coast to manage climate change risks in the long term and provide Egypt with the capacity to adapt to imminent flood risks.
Dr. Mohamed Ahmed Ali, the Project's Executive Director, confirmed that the Climate Change Adaptation Project aims to protect 69 km of the most vulnerable and flood-prone coastal areas within the governorates of Port Said, Dakahlia, Beheira, Damietta, and Kafr El Sheikh. He added that the project not only targets sustainable development and the protection of coastal areas and their citizens from climate change over the coming decades but also focuses on the social dimension for current citizens by improving their living standards. This stems from the project's belief that the social dimension must be a key component in all development projects.
Concluding the seminar, Mr. Hassan Gabrallah, the Project's Media Coordinator, clarified that this event is part of the intensive awareness campaign launched by the project in coastal governorates that have undergone protection works. The campaign aims to enhance the awareness of various community segments, especially youth as future leaders, regarding the efforts made by the state. It also seeks to provide a clear vision for youth on the mechanisms of coordination and integration among different state agencies to protect national infrastructure and coastal resources.
On the sidelines of the seminar, a number of university staff members and outstanding students from Kafr El Sheikh University were honored in recognition of their efforts and active contributions to the various activities organized by the university throughout the year.
